Chilean Popular Assemblea in solidarity with the Mapuche People

The Popular Assembly of Chile in New York joins in solidarity with Mapuche and non-Mapuche communities and groups, in Chile and abroad, who condemn the violent racist actions of civilians against the Mapuche people, as well as the complicity of the Chilean state with this violence. We demand the immediate retraction of the colonialist policies of the Chilean state and a swift response to the demands of the 27 mapuche comuneros currently on hunger strike. We call particular attention to the situation of the Machi Celestino Córdova Tránsito and the pu lamngen Sergio Levinao Levinao, Víctor Llanquile Pilquimán, Juan Queipul Millanao, Juan Calbucoy Montanares, Freddy Marileo Marileo, Danilo Nahuelpi Millanao, Reinaldo Penchulef Sepúlveda, and Hantu Llanca Quidel, for whom today marks the 100th day of the hunger strike.
Mapuche communities have confronted more than 400 years of racism and colonial abuse. Now, as in the past, organized groups of Chilean landowners together with national and transnational industries have sought to establish a narrative of victimization. Let’s remember: the true conflict is one of colonial occupation that seeks to legitimize the economic interests of these groups by using racist ideologies. We expressly reject the threat of paramilitarization suggested by the communique of the “Multigremial Nacional,” which represents 165 organizations of interest groups from the extreme right, among them, Salmon Chile, the Chilean Corporation of Wood Producers, and the Society of Agricultural Advancement of Temuco.
The history of racist and colonial violence that started with the Spanish conquest, that continued with the so called “Pacification of the Araucanía,” that resurfaced with the usurpation of land by the dictatorship and its transfer to forestry and paper industries, and that continues today with the current conflict, all deploy racist narratives that victimize colonial perpetrators. Indeed, what the APRA (the Association for Peace and Reconciliation of the Araucanía) and the Multigremial Nacional now call “peace and reconciliation” (no different than the euphemism of “pacification”), works only to obscure the armed and cultural violence that sustains Chilean state policies against the Mapuche peoples in the Wallmapu. “Pacification,” “reconcialiation,” and “peace” from the perspective of the Chilean state, forestry industries, and the landowning colonial settlers, is in reality subjugation, control, theft, and murder.
Today, the state wields the Anti-terrorist Law—a policy that only serves to deny legal due-process—to Mapuche individuals and groups that are acting to defend, protect, and recuperate stolen territories, and to live in peace. Instead of creating dialogue to advance policies of reparation, and instead of generating anti-extractivist policies that reflect the wisdom and sustainability of the Mapuche kume mongen, the Chilean state, through its policial organisms, has launched a clandestine war disguised as “anti-terrorist” policy.
As an assembly, we say no to racist and colonial violence in the Wallmapu.
The Mapuche people have never been defeated and will never bow down. To our Mapuche sisters and brothers: you are not alone, you have the support of the majority of the Chilean people and the international community, indigenous and non-indigenous. To organized fascist landowners and industrialists: your days of impunity are over. To the Chilean state: there will be no peace if there is no justice for everyone.

La Asamblea Popular de Chile en Nueva York se suma a las múltiples comunidades y agrupaciones mapuche y no mapuche, en Chile y en el exterior, que han expresado su repudio a las violentas acciones racistas por parte de civiles en contra del pueblo mapuche y a la complicidad del Estado chileno antes ellas. Junto a estas organizaciones y comunidades exigimos la inmediata retracción de la política colonialista del estado chileno y su inmediata respuesta ante las demandas de los 27 comuneros mapuche en huelga de hambre, y llamamos la atención en particular a la situación del machi Celestino Córdova Tránsito y de los pu lamngen Sergio Levinao Levinao, Víctor Llanquile Pilquimán, Juan Queipul Millanao, Juan Calbucoy Montanares, Freddy Marileo Marileo, Danilo Nahuelpi Millanao, Reinaldo Penchulef Sepúlveda y Hantu Llanca Quidel quienes cumplen hoy 100 días en huelga.
Ya van más de 400 años de racismo y abuso colonial hacia la comunidad mapuche. Hoy como ayer, grupos de colonos terratenientes e industriales nacionales y transnacionales han buscado establecer una narrativa de victimización. Recordemos: si hay conflicto, este deviene de la ocupación colonial que busca refrendar intereses de grupos económicos bajo ideologías racistas. Rechazamos expresamente la amenaza de paramilitarización sugerida en el comunicado de la “Multigremial Nacional” (una coordinadora de 165 organizaciones patronales vinculadas a los sectores de la ultraderecha chilena, entre ellas Salmón Chile, la Corporación chilena de la madera y la Sociedad de Fomento Agrícola de Temuco).
El arco de violencia racista y colonial que comienza con la conquista española, continúa con la llamada “Pacificación de la Araucanía”, se extiende con la usurpación y regalo de terrenos a las forestales durante la dictadura y que llega hasta el conflicto actual, siempre se ha revestido de esta narrativa racista que victimiza a los victimarios. En efecto, lo que la APRA (la Asociación para la Paz y la Reconciliación de la Araucanía) y la Multigremial Nacional llaman hoy “Paz y Reconciliación”, tal como el falso eufemismo de la “Pacificación”, solo sirve para oscurecer la violencia armada y cultural que sostiene las políticas del estado chileno en contra de la nación mapuche en el Wallmapu. “Pacificación”, “reconciliación”, “paz”, en la perspectiva del estado chileno y de las empresas forestales y colonos terratenientes de la zona, es más bien subyugación, dominio, robo, y asesinato.
En la actualidad, se aplica la Ley Antiterrorista a comuneros mapuche que actúan para defender, proteger o recuperar territorios usurpados y buscan desarrollar sus modos de vida en paz. En vez de plantear políticas de diálogo y reparación, en vez de generar políticas anti-extractivistas que reflejen la sabiduría y sustentabilidad del kume mogen mapuche, el estado chileno, a través de sus organismos policiales, refrenda una guerra clandestina disfrazada de “política anti-terrorista”.
Como asamblea, decimos no a la violencia racista y colonial en el Wallmapu.
El pueblo mapuche nunca ha podido ser doblegado y nunca lo van a doblegar. Al pueblo mapuche le decimos que no está solo: tiene el apoyo de la mayoría de lxs chilenxs y la comunidad internacional indígena y no indígena. A las patronales fascistas organizadas les decimos: se acabó la impunidad. Al estado chileno le decimos: no habrá paz sin justicia para todxs.
